They really do. This is actually a newer translation of the hymn I think, from the 1940s if I’m not mistaken. We nonetheless lose an important aspect of the Latin poetry in the translation.
From the 1940s?! These people knew about TS Eliot and Ezra Pound and they chose "gems of Ind"? Good grief.
I don't think any poetry can be effectively translated. The hymns are definitely the most difficult part of the Liber Usualis, but that challenge is part of the aesthetic appeal. It's just another reason to keep our Latin sharp.
